Exchange Control/SARB Financial Surveillance Consultant

Jennie Richmond

BA (Hons) London University

Jennie moved to SA in 1981 and commenced working with Barclays Bank Head Office in Exchange Control and then worked in Exchange Control Head Office for Allied Bank/ ABSA from 1989 to 1992.

In 1992 Jennie joined Investec Bank, where she headed up the Exchange Control Division for the group, handling Excon for clients, HNW as well as large corporates, and also handled Excon for the Investec Group itself, including its dual listing process when it listed on the LSE. Excon is insidious and many transactions, within many divisions of the bank, involved Excon and she gained vast experience in the types of different financial transactions that took place and often assisted in structuring deals so they could be accommodated within Excon rules and policies.

In 2017, Jennie identified a need for independent specialist Exchange Control consultant, outside of the banking sector, due to there being a dearth of knowledge in many of the commercial banks and often incorrect advice being provided. As a result, she left Investec, although for the first 2 years she was still contracted to them. In 2019, Jennie became a fully independent Exchange Control specialist consultant. She has a private client base and consults to legal and accounting firms in SA. Jennie deals directly with all the Authorised Dealers (banks) Head Offices, as well as the SA Reserve Bank itself.

Jennie’s aim is to be solution based and with a depth of Excon knowledge of many years, she is able to assist with the structuring of Excon applications to obtain relevant Excon approvals wherever possible, and in the shortest possible time.
